Perineal Re-education

What is the Perineum and its role?
The perineum are a group of muscles covering the area of the vaginal opening and the anus. Perineum muscles and ligaments support the stomach, bladder, urethra, rectum, vagina and uterus; leading to its important roles in urination, defecation, sexual intercourse and childbirth.
What causes a weakening in the Perineum?
a. Pregnancy and Child birth
Although giving birth is the most wonderful time in a woman’s life, the nine months of pregnancy and labour have a big impact on the pelvic floor. The baby’s weight puts pressure on it, the increase in hormones (oestrogen and relaxin) and the childbirth will finally stretch the muscles; leading to a loss of tonus and a lack in function of the muscles. This is unavoidable and if left untreated leads to serious consequences such as incontinence (i.e. uncontrolled urination), prolapsed womb, back pain and reduced sexual sensation.
b. Aging
Aging is a natural biological process that cannot be stopped. It leads to atrophy, loss of muscle mass regardless of whether or not the woman gave birth. The muscles lose their elasticity and function. Perineal dysfunction is noticeable among women in their fifties and sixties if left untreated. The symptoms include incontinence, infections and lowering of the genital abdominal organs. Perineal Re-education will help the woman to maintain her muscle tone and elasticity.
What is Perineal Re-education and why is it important?
Perineum re-education is the strengthening of the perineum through electrical stimulation. It is known from experience that muscles get stronger through stimulation and then after; helping the muscles and the vaginal canal to regain shape and function. Re-education keeps the sphincters of the bladder and anus firmly shut, protecting the woman from bacterial or viral infections.

Indications
 After childbearing either naturally or by Caesarean. All women are recommended to have Perineal Re-education two months after delivering or anytime after.
 Women after forty years of menopause and women in their late fifties
 When uncontrollable urine and/or loss of faeces interfere with daily activities, social involvements, i.e. releasing urine when sneezing or coughing, etc.
 If there is chronic pain in the pelvic area
 If frequent visits to the bathroom (ex. 10 times a day) interferes with quality of life.
 Pregnancy

The Method of Perineal Re-education

Perineal re-education is a non-invasive method of treatment based on electrically stimulating the muscles of the vaginal canal and the perineum. Before the start of a treatment, a short interview is done to establish the state and location of the perineum. The woman places the probe into her vaginal canal (like a tampon), containing the electro-stimulators, connected to a monitor which displays her progress. The strength of her perineum is measured and a target level is set to manually and automatically reach the level for the session.

Duration of Treatment

Each treatment lasts for 20 minutes. During this period, the muscles go through phases of stimulation and relaxation to achieve the best results. A woman is required to have a minimum of 10 therapies in a period of 5 weeks in order for the re-education to be successful and if necessary, a woman can have more treatments. In order to maintain muscle tone, a woman should do this treatment every two to three years.

In General

The method of Perineal Re-education has been practised within the EU countries for more than 20 years. In some countries like France, the health insurance covers 100% of the cost of the therapy as it is considered essential for health and a common practice in antenatal medicine. A stronger functioning perineum is the foundation of a quality sex life, enhances immunity, prevents obesity and protects the woman against infections, allergies, depression and other ailments.
Above all, this therapy helps a woman to feel a hundred times better about themselves and their body, giving them a confidence which will last into their golden years. For new mother’s, it makes delivering another child easier. Women who have gone through this therapy will have easier times reaching climax and increased sexual desire.
